Learning at Dulles
Chemistry, computer science, and an eye on medicine.
Aariv is a freshman in the Math and Science Academy at Dulles High School. This year he is taking Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra 2, AP Computer Science Principles, Computer Science I, English and Spanish 2. Over the summer he took AP Human Geography.
Chemistry is his favorite, because it explains the small parts of life and how they work, which is also how the human body works. Last year his favorite was biology.
He is thinking about a career in medicine, possibly neurology or vein surgery. In August he completed four online courses on AI, machine learning and healthcare: Digital Medicine: What is Ethically Justifiable? (openHPI), Machine Learning for Healthcare Applications (Cognitive Class), Intro to Machine Learning (Kaggle) and Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals (IBM SkillsBuild).
He also built a study app for himself, which he uses regularly. Something he learned recently that surprised him: the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that handles decision making, is not fully mature until about age 25.
