The 24 reference swatches are plain hex colours with generic names, not any brand's products. Ranking is by CIEDE2000 distance to a target taken from your sample.
Foundation is compared with the sample colour directly.
A distance under 1 is not noticeable, 1 to 2 shows on close inspection, 2 to 3.5 shows at a glance. These are common rules of thumb, not guarantees for any screen or any eye.

Checked on 25 October 2026 against Perfect Corp's published OpenAPI files. The live paths are under /s2s/v2.0/. The 1.0 in the makeup docs is the version of the effect specification, sent as the version field.

These are colour measurements for cosmetic and educational use. They are not a clinical assessment of anyone's skin, and nothing here replaces a dermatologist.
ITA is arctan((L* minus 50) divided by b*) in degrees. The six bands follow Chardon's thresholds as tabulated by Del Bino, Duval and Bernerd (2018). ITA and Fitzpatrick phototype are different scales and should not be swapped for each other.
CIEDE2000 follows Sharma, Wu and Dalal (2005) in full, including the weighting terms and the blue rotation term. The test suite checks all 34 of their published pairs to four decimals.
The erythema and melanin numbers come from three colour channels, so they are proxies and not spectral measurements. The erythema proxy also rises with deeper tone, which is why redness coverage is reported too.
No standard defines undertone. The Cool, Neutral, Warm and Olive zones are a heuristic from the ratio of a* to b*, tuned for stability, and are labelled that way everywhere.
Foundation moves the sampled tone toward the shade in L*a*b* while softening local variation. On a photo the foundation uses a colour window for skin, not face tracking, and lips are coloured only on the specimen.
Fonts, scripts and styles all load from this site. A photo is read with the browser's file API, drawn to a canvas, and discarded when you close the tab. The one exception is a live YouCam run, which only starts when you press Run live with your own key.
